Crimeny! Our assistant to the director lives next door to me, and this morning I went out to the car to find her out there talking to a policeman. Turns out someone had keyed "KKK" into the hoods of both her family's vehicles. !!! Apparently they have a young black man staying with them, and he has a white girlfriend. I guess someone took offense to that. That's, like, scary and shit. And of course I immediately thought, jeez, this is Alabama?!? But I grew up ninety miles from here in MS, and I never knew of anything like that ever happening--well, once in high school, but one time in 30 years could happen anywhere. But fucking hell, mate. What in the dogfuck?

I think I told you I saw a KKK bonfire ho-down in the backwoods of Virginia. Right under a bridge that spanned the Shenandoah, near Berryville/Winchester.

And people wonder why I don't live there anymore. Er, eighteen years in that hellish place was enough.

The KKK also protested all over Richmond when an Arther Ashe statue was erected on Monument Avenue, which has numerous Confederate statues.

Grack. I will say that, in my two years or so there, Virginia seemed like a more racist place than where I grew up. But that could just be my perception.

Gah. People are such fucking idiots.

I think it's more racist than the deep, deep south, merely for the fact that it's the old capitol of the confederacy...plus all of the national battlefields in that state (which, yes, there are battlefields all over the south, but they seem REALLY prevalant in VA).

Beautiful state, but filled with mostly human meat wads.

It'll get better. 'Slike any place where humans live...you have shitty people and you have good ones. I bet the keying was more related to personality conflict than hatred. That being said---man some people make me HOPE they choose not to pro-create.

True enough. I certainly heard more than enough racist shit in Connecticut, so I know it's not restricted to the south, despite what some honky motherfuckers might say.

about three years ago, someone burned a cross in a yard about 30 miles from americus in the town where my mom grew up. i was FLORED. and felt terribly let down by my beloved south. of course, my first thought when reading this was, okay, so you replace blood-smeared vestibules with klan-tagged cars. anywhere you are, seems something totally f'ed up is happening nearby for your pleasure!

Ummm. How did I miss the incident 3 years ago?

i think it was about three years ago. it was probably an act of hooliganism moreso than a bigger, organized thing-- you know, a couple of 17-year-old degenerates, richland style.

I know! I could probably move to some cabin out in the middle of Montana, and freaky shit would still happen.

I went to the dentist this morning and someone wrote "Jews" on the window in front of his building. Unreal.

That's crazy. I read somewhere that Alabama is one of the lowest states for racially motivated crimes though. I found that kind of interesting.

this strikes me as something that would be incredibly hard to accurately measure.

How so? It's as measurable as any other crime, like rape, would be. The only thing would be all of the ones that go unreported, but most hate crimes are pretty blatant so that's probably rare.

well, the ones that involve spray painting nasty words maybe. but (i know this from friends who study racial and ethnic violence, though not usually in the US context) there is some confusion about whether to count violence between members of the different groups (say, a bar fight between black and white dudes). undoubtedly some of those incidents may be racially motivated and others not, or have some degree of racial motivation and some of the usual bar fight stuff. racially motivated vandalism is pretty obvious, but violence is generally harder to understand. i think this is one of the reasons many people oppose hate crimes legislation - it's not clear whether attacks on members of certain groups are always hate crimes, or what. i think crime in general is something social scientists (who are usually responsible for the overblown studies) don't have a handle on at all.

This is a fascinating development and a tad scary. More importantly though, I wish to congratulate you on your use of "Crimeny!" and "What in the dogfuck?" Well done sir! Well done!
