OK, I have a cell phone these days, but I'm still kind of a fuddy-duddy about them. I just hate to see people checking out at the grocery store and flapping their gums off like everyone around them is just so eager to hear what they have to say. I want to say, "Goddamnit, there's a living, breathing human being scanning your stuff right there in front of you, and you can't be bothered to say hello to him?"

Dude was on the bus today going on and on to some poor bastard on the other end of the line about how wonderful the new technology is, and he obviously thinks that the rest of us are lucky to be on the bus with him to hear him drop science. Big, old, fat-ass white guy with a perm, talking about "the reason computers use so much power is because of the way they work." No SHIT? That's deep, yo. Then he got to talking about the Oscars and how they don't just throw those around to anyone. (I refrained from saying anything about Melanie Griffith or Marisa Tomei.) Then he said -- and I have not the foggiest hint of a notion what this means -- "Halle Berry is the Alicia Keys of Hollywood."

What killed me was the kids sitting behind him. They were making fun of him, plenty loud enough for him to hear if only he had come out of his cell-phone trance for a moment (which, of course, he didn't). "Motherfucker got a cell phone, I wanna know why motherfucker ain't got no car!" I was dying.

that post made me die laughing.

especially "halle berry is the alicia keys of hollywood." oh my god, that's ridiculous...halle berry is a well-established and talented actress, while alicia keys is (at this point) a pretty young, one hit wonder.

some people are so ignorant. hey, look, two black women succeeding, one must just be the equililant of the other.

Yeah, exactly! I didn't look around to see the looks he got when he said the Halle Berry thing (I was laughing already and I didn't want to cause a scene), but I would have loved to see the eyes roll. I know mine did. :)

I'm personally a bit offended by white people talking trash about Halle Berry crying last night. It just surprises me.

I work in a counter service cafe and rich insecure idiots come in all the time and try to simultaneously order while having completely unimportant conversations on their cell phones. It's completely rude to us and the person on the other end. Invariably their order comes out wrong because they're not paying attention so we just say "We'll be with you as soon as you're done with your conversation." and move on to the next person.

There's this one bakery here that has a no cell phones sign for that very reason.

Right on. I worked in restaurants and fast-food joints for a long time, and it always amazed me how rude people could be. And that was before cell phones became so prevalent; I can't imagine what it must be like having to deal with those people. I think everybody should have to work in the service industry at some time, just to get some sensitivity. Probably wouldn't work, though -- that kind of person would be just as rude on the other side of the counter.

And the Halle Berry thing -- I didn't see it, but I can certainly understand why she would become emotional up there. I mean damn, it was a historic occasion, and especially after the Sidney Poitier thing (which I did see) . . . Some people should just shut up. :)

Hm.

Alicia Keys' "hit" song is just one long chorus! WTF?!

Yeah, who knows? I wanted to tell the guy that he was full of shit, but I couldn't get through. Line was busy, ya know. ;)

I get the feeling his line is busy even when he's not on the phone. (Must be those electrical fields from the bad perm.)
