When I say the word "yardstick," do you know what I mean? Since I've moved to Tuscaloosa, I've asked two store employees if they could tell me where to find yardsticks, and they've both acted like I meant some kind of sticks that you put out in the yard. Tonight at Target, I had to explain to the kid what a yardstick looks like: "Well, it's three feet long, and it's wood . . ." What's that about? Are yardsticks new to Alabama?

They must have moved on to the metric system down there.

Maybe you've spent too much time in New England. Did you pronounce it like "yahdstick"?

I had a difficult time finding shoeleaces in North Dakota. Everyone I asked got a stupefied look and mumbled, "Shoe-LACES?!?!?"

Perhaps you just ask for the really long rulers.

perhaps they are accustomed to tape-measueres, and have no concept of yardsticks?

I don't know a thing about the evolution of measuring technology, but perhaps yardsticks are the equivalent of vinyl records?

anyway, yeah, I have heard of a yardstick before.

When the kid tonight finally figured out what I was talking about, he said, "OH! Like a measuring device?"

Measuring stuff 'round the house, yanno. I have some posters I need to get framed, and I have some empty spots that I want to get furniture for, but only if it fits. :)

Yeah, a measuring device about a YARD long - on a STICK. Or 3 rulers taped together to make a super-ruler. Good luck. I got the shoe-laces at a hardware store. They were right next to the yardsticks.

:-)

why not measuring tape? it makes such a satisfying sound when you snap it back into place.

my grandmother had a yardstick. a thick one with a leather strap on the end. my cousins and i used to ball up some masking tape and play yardstickball in the cul-de-sac.

Wat else would you call a yardstick? Leave it to Alabama to be behind in the Imperial System of measurement. Forget metrics!
