When I say the word "yardstick," do you know what I mean? Since I've moved to Tuscaloosa, I've asked two store employees if they could tell me where to find yardsticks, and they've both acted like I meant some kind of sticks that you put out in the yard. Tonight at Target, I had to explain to the kid what a yardstick looks like: "Well, it's three feet long, and it's wood . . ." What's that about? Are yardsticks new to Alabama?

Wat else would you call a yardstick? Leave it to Alabama to be behind in the Imperial System of measurement. Forget metrics!
